Arriving in the Sonoran Desert in 1928, Wisconsin-born architect Frank Lloyd Wright contended that there was “nothing more inspiring to an architect … than pure Arizona desert.” In those years, the territory – which had recently become the last of the contiguous Unites States – was primarily noteworthy as a refuge for those suffering from lung ailments.
